This is the Frigiliana market, and if you’re staying anywhere along this part of the Costa del Sol, it’s a fair reason to point the car uphill. Don’t expect a sprawling affair. You can walk the whole thing in twenty minutes, which suits the village it sits in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When is the Frigiliana market day?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Frigiliana market day is Thursday. Every Thursday, year round, from around 8am until 2pm. There’s no second day and nothing on Sundays, whatever some listings claim. If a guidebook tells you otherwise, it’s confusing Frigiliana with somewhere else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Go early. By eleven the plaza is busy and the sun has found the square, and the stallholders start drifting off well before the official two o’clock finish. Get there before ten and you’ll have room to look properly, plus first pick of the bread and cheese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your trip doesn’t land on a Thursday, you’re not stuck. Nerja runs a market on Tuesdays, and the Monday market down at Torrox Costa<\/a> is an easy drive if you want something bigger. It’s a much larger affair, so go there for the haul and come to Frigiliana for the setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exploring the Frigiliana flea market<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You’ll see it billed online as the Frigiliana flea market. Set your expectations accordingly. There’s no field of bric-a-brac, no tables of other people’s old records and chipped crockery. The proper flea market in this area is the Sunday rastrillo down in Nerja. What Frigiliana runs is a working street market, a couple of dozen stalls strung along the plaza at the entrance to the old town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s part of the appeal. It’s compact and unhurried, more \u2018weekly shop\u2019 than \u2018tourist trap\u2019, even with plenty of visitors passing through. Rails of clothes sit beside crates of tomatoes. Further along, someone has spread out hand-tooled belts in the shade. Behind it all, the white houses climb the hillside and the sea sits flat and bright in the distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local products and crafts to buy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Buy the miel de ca\u00f1a<\/em>. Frigiliana is home to the last sugar cane honey factory in mainland Europe, and the dark, treacle-like syrup it produces is the one thing here you won’t easily find at home. Locals drizzle it over fried aubergine or fresh goat’s cheese. A bottle costs a few euros and survives the flight back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Past that, the stalls cover the usual Andalucian mix. You’ll find leather goods, ceramics painted in blues and yellows, costume jewellery, woven baskets, dried fruit and nuts, and produce from the surrounding Axarqu\u00eda valley. The craft is decent rather than precious, so haggle gently if a price feels steep. A little back-and-forth is expected and nobody minds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For something more polished, the permanent shops threaded through Frigiliana  old town<\/a> stay open the rest of the week, and several sell work from local artisans you won’t see on the trestle tables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to get to the Frigiliana market<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Frigiliana sits about six kilometres up from the coast, in the hills above Nerja. By car, take the A-7 to the Nerja exit and follow the signs uphill. The road climbs and twists, but it’s well surfaced and the views open up fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No car? The Alsa bus runs up from Nerja and from M\u00e1laga, and drops you a short walk from the plaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parking is the part people get wrong. The main paid car park sits at the village entrance, under the same plaza the market occupies. It runs to roughly \u20ac11 for the day and has a 2.2-metre height limit, so leave the campervan at home. There’s a free car park near the tourist office a couple of minutes’ walk away. On a Thursday it fills early, so arrive before 10:30am. If it’s gone, take the paid car park rather than crawling the blue-zone streets for a space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
